When God Begins Something in You

In the beginning, God created. It’s one of the simplest yet most powerful phrases in Scripture: “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” (Genesis 1:1)

The Hebrew word for “created” is bara’, to bring something into existence that never existed before. It means God didn’t just form what was already there; He imagined, initiated, and spoke it into being. Out of darkness came light. Out of emptiness came purpose.

But creation didn’t start out beautiful or complete. “The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep.” (Genesis 1:2) Before order, there was chaos. Before clarity, there was confusion. And yet, God worked. Step by step, He shaped what seemed formless into something good.

Sometimes our lives mirror that same process. We see the chaos, not the purpose. But Philippians reminds us, “He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ.” (Philippians 1:6) God never starts what He doesn’t intend to finish.

When you can’t yet see the finished product, remember that creation looked incomplete before it became breathtaking. God’s beginnings are not proof of absence, they are proof of initiation.

Take a moment to reflect: What part of your life still feels formless, and could it be that God is still creating something beautiful there?
