How to Put God First at Work: 8 Biblical Priorities for Career Success
What we’re looking for at work are also looking for us; but not this version of us! If we provide a haven for bees, then our search for honey would cease. It’s the law of priority.
❤️Matthew 6:33
“But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.”
“But first and most importantly seek (aim at, strive after) His kingdom and His righteousness [His way of doing and being right—the attitude and character of God], and all these things will be given to you also.”(AMP)
Earlier in this chapter, Jesus teaches some fundamental truths. He warned against prioritizing earthly treasures. “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth…” The issue is not whether wealth is evil, but who is your master?
And Jesus goes on to address WORRY - a baby delivered out of wrong priority. “Do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear.” He pushed His truth citing the birds of the air and the lilies of the field.
Pay attention to decisions people make at work. They are largely driven by worrying on these same issues.
If you’re a Philip and your entire workforce is an Ethiopian eunuch, reading Matthew 6:33 but needed some light, how would you help them understand?
Well, provide this presentation to them on what it means to firstly seek God’s kingdom. This is so that none of them misses what God is doing in their work space:
1. God’s approval above man’s approval . Our highest desire is to please God, not merely impress our boss or colleagues (Colossians 3:23).
2. Prioritize Integrity above personal gain. You should refuse bribery, fraud, manipulation, or dishonesty, even if they promise promotion or profit.
3. Choose character above career if they ever conflict. You should rather lose an opportunity than lose your Christian witness.
4. Value service above status. You should see your work as serving God and benefiting people, not merely climbing corporate or social ladder.
5. Excellence above mediocrity. You should give your best always because your work is an offering to God.
6. Prioritize people above profit. You need treat colleagues, clients, and subordinates with dignity, fairness, and compassion because they bear God’s image.
7. Trust above anxiety. Instead of being consumed by fear over promotions, contracts, or job security, you should faithfully do your part and trust God with the outcome.
8. Kingdom purpose above personal ambition. You should ask how your skills, influence, and position can advance God’s purposes - through justice, encouragement, generosity, truth, and faithful witness.
Take a bow after your presentation and trust the HolySpirit to do a perfect work in the heart of the entire workforce.
Your Brother,
David Kay-Akeremale
